Wines with characters …
The Local Collection is a welcoming, casual
and friendly new option when taking friends
to the Peninsula’s hills this Spring.
It’s an entirely new concept for the Red Hill and
district wine trail: an ‘umbrella’ venue for six
small acre, artisan local wine labels.
It’s a Red Hill restaurant without the glitz – more
like visiting aunty and uncle in their farmhouse
kitchen.
The Local Collection is also a place where it’s
ok to simply drop by and enjoy a cofee and the
Sunday papers on the sunny deck with serene
valley views. According to Gai Clough: “The
unique thing about what we’re doing is you and
your friends don’t have to pick 10 peninsula
cellar door destinations from the map of more
than 40; you can come here and we’ll have
more than 20 wines from six labels all in the one
friendly cottage in a comfortable rural setting.
What’s more, you can come here after a visit to
the beach or before a barbecue with friends -
and simply enjoy the place. It’s not a cellar door
sales-driven experience.”
As a gallery, The Local Collection’s walls
are adorned in works by local artists which
celebrate our stunnning Peninsula landscape,
the characters who call it home and, of course,
the wines of the region.
Labels represented at
The Local Collection are:
Ocean Eight, Dunns Creek Estate,
Point Leo Estate, Whinstone Estate,
Perry Lane, and Buckley Run.
At every turn in this delightful Mornington-
Flinders Rd discovery you can see the
underpinning philosophies of “small is beautiful”
and ”wine is for sharing”. You will be made to
feel completely at home… and you’ll have a
friend for life if you give Lucy a pat on the way
to the tasting room.
Ocean Eight winemaker Mike Aylward said: “On
any given weekend you’ll find here one or more
of the people who actually grew the grapes
or made the wine – in for a friendly chat. Our
tastings aren’t a ‘cellar door’ experience, they’re
more like a friendly natter with a bunch of
incredibly interesting, and approachable people
who love what they do.”
Perry Lane winemaker Greg Ray (pictured)
said: “Members of The Local Collection are
very much hands-on with their wine: their
passion, their toil, their obvious sat-isfaction
– and pride. So, while they’re pouring you a
tasting glass, you’re hearing their stories – much
more enriching than the average ‘cellar door’
experience. That’s why we’ve dubbed The
Local Collection as being about ‘wines with
characters’: there’s an intimacy here that takes
you into the craft of the product, and into the
lives of those faces behind the labels, to share
in the story that each bottle holds.”
The Local Collection’s public opening is
Sunday, September 23 from 2pm.
