During the winter months, when the days get
shorter and cooler and BBQ?s seem to be less
attractive, kitchens become the warm hub of home.
Picture soul food slowly baking, soft lighting, a
mellow glass of wine and friends gathered. Our
kitchens are magnets! Instant attraction!
This issue we talk about kitchens - Looking at facts,
alternatives, trends and tips to inspire us to get in there
and cook up a storm.
The creator ?Peter Jay? from Jayson Builders combined
functionality, plenty of deep drawers, storage, pantry
space, a nook for contraptions such as telephones,
notepads, diaries, with filing cabinets & drawers below
an appliance cupboard & drawers. Basically everything in
its place and easy accessibility was on Peter?s wish list.
Catherine and Lizzie from ?Mellow Canary? in Mt Eliza
like to combine function and style without compromising
originality. They encourage clients to hold onto the
well loved piece that can be incorporated in a kitchen.
Their philosophy is that it can co-exist with even the
most modern of kitchens. Their choice would be natural
materials such as timbers and stone to create an
enduring warmth and sense of integrity.
Cabinet maker, Chris from CFS Cabinet and joinery
relies on clients to make their own decisions about the
material they would like to use in their homes, sources
and then completes the package. Suggestions like
shelves with the same colour as exterior cupboards, soft
door/drawer closing devices, sturdy/solid hinging and
slide panels for drawers, ties experience with creativity.
Kitchen cabinetry is of course a very personal journey.
Here are some comments:
Gail of Mornington?: I love my vinyl wrap cupboards-
contrary to thought they don?t smudge, they reflect light
and are easy to clean.
?John of Mt Martha?: We chose 2-pack paint on our
cupboards which has withstood the test of years but now
we need to replace it. We are going to change the colour
(an alternative that is only with paint).
?Monica of Mount Eliza?: I love my timber cupboards.
I love their warmth. We?ve had to do a bit of
maintenance over the years but I?m glad I chose a style
I feel is timeless.
?Jan of Sorrento?: My laminate kitchen is so durable
with the kids around it withstands all the knocks and
wipes down easily. A good choice for now. Wish for
vinyl wrap though!
Bench tops
..are possibly the main focal point of the kitchen, maybe
the home. It's one of the first things that need to be
considered when doing your interior design/decorating.
The ?benchmarks?, excuse the pun, have changed
considerably. Paula from ?Nepean Stone? says some
of the misconceptions of the industry include ?granite is
dearer than man made reconstituted stone?.This is not
necessarily so. Granite prices depend on availability and
scarcity. Some granites can be four times dearer than
others- reconstituted stone can be as much as a mid
range granite depending on the stone and size of the
kitchen. (i.e. the purchase of a slab of granite vs. the
engineering of the reconstituted stone.)
